Inside Compactica: The System Behind Our Own QA and QC
We Don’t Just Build QA Systems, We Rely on Them
At Compactica, our mission is simple: to help build safer communities and longer-lasting infrastructure that stands on solid ground.
QuarterBack - Compactica Internal QA
We do that by raising the bar for quality assurance and quality control in earthworks.
And that commitment doesn’t stop with our clients.
It drives how we design, test, and monitor our own technology.
Every Compactica field system, every parcel of data, and every compaction result is continuously validated through our internal QA/QC platform, QuarterBack, achieving the same level of rigor we help our clients achieve in the field.
What QuarterBack Does
QuarterBack is Compactica’s internal, custom-coded QA/QC platform that ensures reliability, accuracy, and confidence in every compaction measurement.
It continuously monitors three main areas of system performance:
Hardware and System Health – CPU load, memory, temperature, and network performance are tracked in real time to verify that every Compactica field unit is operating as expected.
Sensor and Data Integrity – GPS and accelerometer data are evaluated for accuracy, latency, and completeness. QuarterBack confirms that sensors are collecting consistent, trustworthy data from the roller.
Data Processing and Measurement Quality – The platform reviews parcel-level compaction data as it’s processed, assigning each parcel a quality score based on the reliability of its underlying data.
This continuous, layered monitoring means Compactica can catch potential issues long before they ever reach a project dashboard.
How Compactica Scores Its Own Confidence
One of the most innovative parts of QuarterBack is how it evaluates its own data confidence in real time.
Each Compactica field box continuously scores how confident the system is in the data it’s collecting and processing. If a reading doesn’t meet internal quality thresholds, for example due to missing data, sensor interruptions, or connection loss, it’s flagged as SUS (short for “suspicious,” and yes, we’re staying current with the lingo).
These low-confidence areas are instantly visualized on our internal maps. When a patch of soil data looks inconsistent, QuarterBack helps our engineers determine why. Sometimes it’s a true soft spot in the soil; other times, it’s simply a sensor or data gap.
The confidence scoring system allows Compactica to:
Differentiate between soil anomalies and data issues. If a stiffness map shows an outlier, we can tell whether it’s a real material variation or a signal artifact.
Filter and justify data corrections. By identifying bad data confidently, our team can smooth maps and explain why.
Preserve full transparency. Every adjustment is traceable and backed by data-driven reasoning.
And it doesn’t stop there. Each field box runs its own instance of QuarterBack, performing live QA checks as data is captured, so by the time it reaches our processors, we already know its quality and integrity.
What’s next? Compactica is developing a new layer called Mission Control, which will build on QuarterBack’s live monitoring capabilities. It will allow our team to oversee every active system across all job sites simultaneously, providing fleetwide visibility, trend analysis, and historical data insights. With Mission Control, we’ll be able to see when, where, and why an issue occurred, even long after the roller has left the site.
In short: QuarterBack doesn’t just watch data. It understands it, and helps us make smarter decisions about what to trust, what to filter, and what to act on.
“QuarterBack doesn’t just monitor data, it understands it.”
Real-Time Alerts and Proactive Support
QuarterBack isn’t a passive system; it’s always on.
When something drifts outside expected performance ranges, Compactica’s customer success team is immediately notified through automated alerts.
From there, our team reaches out directly to the client using that equipment, often before they’ve noticed anything unusual on their end.
That proactive approach means problems are addressed before they affect project data. By intervening early, Compactica helps contractors avoid incomplete logs, rework, or lost data, keeping compaction results accurate from start to finish.
Compactica Internal QA
Why This Matters for Clients
While QuarterBack is an internal system, its impact is entirely customer-facing. It’s how we know that when a contractor uses Compactica, they’re working with a tool that’s been validated at every level, from software stability to sensor accuracy.
In practice, this means:
More reliable compaction data on every parcel
Fewer interruptions from hardware or connectivity issues
Consistent performance across fleets and projects
Peace of mind knowing their data is monitored and backed by live QA processes
Compactica’s QA/QC isn’t an afterthought; it’s built into the DNA of the system.
Proof of Reliability, Built In
Contractors rely on Compactica to deliver defensible, data-rich QA.
QuarterBack is how we hold ourselves to that same standard.
By applying the same rigor to our internal operations that we enable in the field, Compactica closes the loop on quality, from the hardware that gathers data to the insights that guide construction decisions.
This is our proof of reliability and our promise of consistency: every measurement we deliver is supported by a live, intelligent QA/QC system that never stops watching.
